“Eastern or Western?” is one of the first questions I ask new cruisers. Both are beautiful, but they feel different, and the right choice depends on what you want from your vacation.
The quick answer
- Choose the Western Caribbean if you want adventure, history and an easy departure from Texas.
- Choose the Eastern Caribbean if you want classic white-sand beaches, island-hopping and more relaxing sea days.
Western Caribbean at a glance
Where it goes: Mexico’s Yucatán coast, Belize, Honduras, Grand Cayman and Jamaica.
What it’s known for: Mayan ruins, cave tubing, zip-lining and some of the best reef snorkeling in the region.
Where it leaves from: Galveston, plus Florida ports and New Orleans. For Texans, that often means no flight required.
Best for: first-time cruisers, families and travelers who like active shore excursions.
Eastern Caribbean at a glance
Where it goes: the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, St. Maarten, Puerto Rico, Antigua and often a Bahamas private island.
What it’s known for: postcard beaches, calm turquoise bays, duty-free shopping and a mix of American, Dutch, French and British island culture.
Where it leaves from: mostly Florida ports (Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Port Canaveral) and San Juan. Texans usually fly to the port.
Best for: beach lovers, couples and honeymooners, and anyone who loves a sea day by the pool.
Don’t forget the Southern Caribbean
Already done the closer ports? The Southern Caribbean — Aruba, Curaçao, Bonaire, St. Lucia and Barbados — offers dramatic scenery and islands many cruisers never reach. These trips are often a bit longer and usually start in San Juan or Florida.
Still not sure?
